I’m Gonna Be Ready

August.

For some, it means time to go back to school…

For others it means to send the kids back to school.

For me, it means, it’s time to go back to school to work…. with 5th Graders.

For context, out of my 20 years of teaching experience, 14 of them were spent teaching Kindergarteners and 1st Graders.

….Let’s just say that teaching upper elementary students… is a WHOLE DIFFERENT WORLD!

…Because many of them are NOT always nice.

…And many of them are NOT always cooperative.

…And many of them have a daily struggle with being RESPECTFUL.

But I am DECLARING and DECREEING that when Tuesday, August 6th rolls around… I’m gonna be READY!

Ready meaning…

I will have a SMILE on my face and a song in my heart.

I will be prayed up and filled up with the Word.

I will walk in the door with a good attitude.

I will be ready to do my best.

I don’t know what you may be facing that may not be too exciting for you right now (ie. family problems, financial problems, work problems, neighbor problems, or all of the above), but I hope that I can encourage us all today.  I’m going to tell you 3 reasons why I’m going to be ready for my new 5th Grade crew, this Tuesday.

  1. I’m gonna be ready, because I CAN.  It is in my power to be ready!

You see, after every holiday and summer vacation, there are many who come in to work declaring how the break JUST WASN’T long enough.  Many begin the day armed with long faces, frowns, and complaints.

I noticed this years ago and reflected on how I felt after being in that kind of atmosphere.  It seemed to bring my spirit a little lower.

Then, I thought about my GOD and I made a DECISION.  I decided to ask God to help me to have a smile on my face and a feeling of excitement whenEVER it’s time to go back to work.  I’ve been doing that ever since…and God has been faithful EVERY time.

In fact, now, I try to brighten the day of others by SMILING brightly and speaking enthusiastically to everyone I see.

Phil. 4:13 reminds me that “I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me.”

God is with me.  His Spirit is in me.

The Bible says….

For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.  Phil. 2:13

In Genesis Chapter 1, I find that “I am made in the image of God….” AND

…God has given me a spirit of POWER, LOVE, and a SOUND MIND. 2 Tim. 1:7

My attitude is a decision.  So, I choose to have a positive attitude and a smile on my face.

Besides, JOY is a Fruit of the Spirit.

I choose to be ready to do my best with the students that I have been given to work with this year.

We have been charged in Colossians 3:23-24

And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;

Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.

So, I’m going to be ready!

2. I’m gonna be ready, because I am NOT alone.

In Matt. 28:20 God has promised, “Lo, I am with you ALWAYS…even to the end of the world….

So, I just know that includes:

even to the end of this work day…

even to the end of this medical challenge…

even to the end of this financial setback…

I’m sure I missed something, so:

even to the end of this ____________ (you fill in the blank).

God is faithful…

We must KNOW and BELIEVE that what he brings us TO, he’ll bring us THROUGH.

In addition, we have to remember to look at things from a Godly perspective…

God’s perspective is more like the “glass half full” rather than the “glass half empty”

…In fact, with God, our “cup runneth OVER.” Ps. 23:5

You see, God is the most POSITIVE example we can follow…

…All the promises of God in him are YEA, and in him AMEN…  2 Cor. 1:20

When we spend daily time in God’s word, we learn of his promises. So, we can claim those promises as we are obedient to God’s Word.

It bears repeating, Phil. 4:13, “I CAN do all things through Christ which strengthens me.”

“CAN” is a very positive word, as opposed to “CAN’T.”

We CAN make it!

We CAN do it!

We CAN handle it!

So, when the Devil tries to fill our minds with LIES and CONTRADICTORY BELIEFS, we have been given power and authority to “bring into captivity EVERY THOUGHT to the obedience of Christ.” 2 Cor. 10:5

Then, all I have to do is call on the Lord.

I pray to him on the way to work EVERY morning.

We talk all through the day.

When I am TIRED or FRUSTRATED…I TALK to God.When I am CONFUSED on what else to TRY, DO, or SAY in a difficult or challenging situation with difficult people (whether children and/or adults)…I TALK to God.

Then, when God gives me the answers I need…I THANK HIM.

In the evenings, I thank God AGAIN for helping me get through the day.

So, I’m gonna be ready!

3. I’m gonna be ready, because I am making a difference.

First of all, I know I am there for a reason.

As a Christian, I am impacting SOMEBODY in a positive way, just because I’m there.

No matter what you do for a living…as a Christian, we are not just going to a job or just going to work.  We are always on assignment.

We are always a WITNESS for the Lord.  People are WATCHING us.

People are LISTENING to us.  People are BEING IMPACTED by us.

We must NEVER forget that.

In today’s world, many people don’t have a lot of Christian examples in their daily circle.

In fact, every day…more and more, people are compromising what it means to be a Christian and to live a Christian lifestyle.  In fact, many have laid down Christian living all together.

After all, being a Christian is not just a title, it’s an explanation of our LIFESTYLE.

Therefore, just being an authentic Christian in my workplace, church, and home could be the difference between someone I know being SAVED or being LOST.

As a Christian, you ARE making a difference just because you’re there.

You TALK differently.

You ACT differently.

You DRESS differently.

You THINK differently…because you ARE different!

This is because you have been INFLUENCED and IMPACTED by the Word of God and the time you have spent with HIM.

And THAT my friend… is going to stand OUT in today’s society.

So, yes, on Tuesday morning when my new darlings dawn my classroom door,

I’m gonna be ready!

I pray that each of you will join me in being ready, too, when your next workday rolls around…

Most of all, I pray that as we live for Jesus in our DAY-TO- DAY lives, we will be found READY when Jesus comes!
